Vaccine Maitri – the vaccine export drive of India is resuming next month

Surplus vaccines export and donation will be resumed by India from October onwards. This has been announced by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi sets on the visit to the US where the issue can come into picture during summit of the Quad countries – India, United States, Australia and Japan and Australia.

India, is the world’s biggest maker of vaccines. It had stopped vaccine exports in April to focus on vaccinating its own population. Government of India is aiming to vaccinate its entire 94.4 crore adult population by December. It has so far administered at least one dose to 61 per cent of them. The priority of ‘Vaccine Maitri‘ drive will be to export in the neighbouring countries first. Also, only surplus supply will be exported without undermining the need of vaccine inside the country first. Before the export halt in April, India has sold or donated 6.6 crore vaccine doses to nearly 100 countries.
