Digital transformation is a disruption and is not an evolution but a revolution, said Dr Guruprasad, Director, MIT VPU College of Design. He was speaking at the hybrid conference –Adobe Creative Campus: Cultivating Digital Literacy-Engage, Develop and Employ held at Bengaluru here on Friday.

Digital transformation that is happening is a golden period. Even a sabjiwallah (vegetable vendor) uses a QR code. We are moving towards metaverse and the possibilities are unlimited, he further added. Fellow panelist, Dr Jayashree Venkatesh, Head, Fashion, Bangalore University said that learning and unlearning is the key as prophesied by Alvin Toffler. “Design is like energy and digital technology has provided an impetus to its development.”

Echoing a similar sentiment, Dr Guruprasad said that computing power has changed the dynamics and digital tools have the capacity to connect with the masses and democratise design.

New aspirations will drive design

The present generation is brimming with ideas and their aspirations will drive design. The expectations of the new generation will culminate in latest design. Dr Guruprasad said that in the past it took years to learn the rudiments not anymore. The Tinkering Labs in schools across the country will bring in a major change and take learning from abstract to real learning. AR and VR will bring in a new set of tools. “The future is what not to make and it will create a new universe,” he added.

Maker spaces will be the classrooms and extra-curricular will become the curriculum. The biggest change in the mind-set of the people is the acceptance of failure. “Getting up after falling down is no longer considered as failure. Creativity can flourish only when not punished. This gives confidence and hope.

Fashion should be based on ‘Circular Design’ principle

Dr Jayashree said that the future design should be based on sustainability and convenience and fashion is not just creating apparel but be based on the circular design principle. She went on to add that India has immense opportunity with a huge land mass and native skills change every 200 km.

There was also a presentation of Adobe software by Darakshan Khan, Solution Consultant, Adobe. Designers work becomes easy with the tools that Adobe offers. The session was moderated by Supreet Nagaraju, Head, Education Digital Media, India and South Asia, Adobe.
