The Delhi government has banned storage, sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali much in advance so that traders do not invest money in it from now. Last year the ban was imposed after the assessing the seriousness of the situation a bit late, just before Diwali leading to losses by the traders. The ban has been imposed owing to dangerous pollution levels in the national capital during the time of the festival. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has mentioned that imposing ban is essential to save lives. He appealed the traders that in view of the complete ban, do not stock the fire crackers.
On November 5, 2020, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced the ban on the use of firecrackers in the national capital after reviewing the COVID-19 situation. He had mentioned that Coronavirus cases had increased due to the festival season and pollution and hence fire crackers are being banned and medical infrastructure being ramped up, among other measures. He had also mentioned that people would be able to enjoy a wonderful atmosphere and good vibes as two crore people will be performing Laxmi Puja together leading to well-being in every household. Announcing the ban much ahead of Diwali in 2021 is a step towards saving traders from losses.
