Supreme Court unhappy with rushed appointment of Acting Chairperson of NCLAT

Supreme Court has expressed unhappiness with the rushed appointment of Justice M Venugopal as Acting Chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). He has been appointed as the Acting Chairperson of the NCLAT, as the appellate tribunal continues to lack a permanent head for more than eighteen months now. A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana has said that it would be taking up the matter of “hurried appointment” on Thursday. Other members of the bench are Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice L Nageswara Rao.

Attorney General, K K Venugopal has been asked to appear to take instructions on the issue which is in regards to the premature retirement of Justice Cheema as NCLAT Chairman. The bench has expressed its unhappiness over the rushed appointment and premature retirement. “It appears he has been replaced. I don’t know how this is happening,” said Justice N V Ramana.
