Gems of India who have discovered themselves were represented by IndiGlobal Media Network on National Youth Day 2022 in a special webinar. Chief Guest Major Ashok Kaul called them ‘GEMS’ who have discovered themselves in their journey with our youngest participant being as young as 16-year-old Husaina Poonwala and 17-year-old T Balaji.
Awakening in life can be as early as two-years, as T-Balaji narrates how the clouds inspired him to forecast rains. While the gadgets, laptops and tools are available for professional weather forecasting, he still uses the unprofessional way of seeing the clouds, wind movement to forecast the rains, hail and thunderstorms. To make it easy for farmers in Telangana to understand, Balaji realized that videos in Telugu were very helpful to them. Those who follow him are now able to prevent damage to their crops and they call him back or message their gratitude to him.
Lockdown of Covid 19 in 2020, has been a learning for many and as Husaina Poonawala connected grandparents across the continents and brought smiles on their faces, it was clear that Social Media can be leveraged for good causes. Her journey began with technology applications and its use in villages, reaching out to people by calling for supplying resources like old toys, books and learning material for those who do not have access to it. At this young age, she is able to identify the barriers in those who cannot avail of them for lack of resources. Inspired by her mother, who runs a pre-school, she is sensitive to the needs of those who are unable to procure basics. Social work is now her passion and she finds more and more ways to reach out to people and give her best. Even if it means skipping a movie to attend to the cause!
Prem Kumar Vislawth – Marut Drones – To get Drones to solve the problems of mosquito breeding in lakes was unheard of. It was an unheard of solution. But one experiment led to the people living around the lake areas of Hyderabad breeding easily and that gave a boost which has now led to it becoming a solution to control the breeding of mosquitoes.
What it has also led to is saving human-beings from exposure to contaminants in lakes and carriers of contagious diseases. This dual combination led to acceptance of Drones and also got Marut Drones to look at filling the gaps in healthcare systems by using Drone Technology. In far-flung public health centers, there is shortage of blood, medicines and emergency medicines used for snake bites. These are now available in Telangana through the ‘Medicine from Sky’ project. The drones have successfully deployed medicines and vaccines to far flung areas and this project is being taken up in other parts of the country on pilot basis. With there now being a service, in flood-situation in Telangana, Drones have also delivered milk packets on the request of villagers. Using technology for social causes has been best leveraged by Marut Drones.
From doing nothing in life, to fighting for the rights of Acid Attack victims, Ashish Skhula has come a long way. His journey is inspiring as he is working for those who have been disfigured by crimes done to them. To get them out of their homes, give them a platform to be seen and also to be accepted is a huge gesture. The Chhanv Foundation and Sheroes Hangout is a platform for these victims. Like everything else in the world, Sheroes Hangout has also been disrupted during Covid 19. The goal of Ashish is to support them and ensure that the dignity created for them at Sheroes Hangout continues.
