Unlike Formula I cars, Formula E cars can go to a speed of 300 kmph on street circuits on black topped roads. For Hyderabadis, the recently concluded trial runs on the 2.37 km track hugging the Telangana Secretariat, NTR Gardens and Lumbini Park along the Hussain Sagar Lake was a treat as it was the first time that such an event was held in the city of minarets.

Formula E Gen 2 cars are similar to the Formula 1 cars but run on electric vehicles technology. Powered by a 250kW battery, the car can reach a speed of 0 to 62 kmph in less than three seconds and has the potential top speed of 280 kmph. What is more! The noise even at full speed reaches 8-0 decibels.

With a whirr

  • Formula E cars can go to a speed of 300 kmph on street circuits on black topped roads.
  • Powered by a 250kW battery, the car can reach a speed of 0 to 62 kmph in less than three seconds and has the potential top speed of 280 kmph.
  • A whizz pierces the air and not the grrrr of the race car engine. Reason: electric cars are powered entirely by batteries.
  • All the teams in the race use the same body and battery, but can design their own motor and software to try to gain an advantage over each other on the track.
  • Races are held in the middle of major cities, so passers-by can catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

For the sceptics, the cars use hybrid tyres and are designed in a way that will last the entire race and in all weather conditions.

The Formula E championship in Hyderabad is scheduled on February 10 and 11. In all, 22 drivers from 11 teams from different parts of the world will be participating in single-seater electric cars.

Till data, 100 races have been completed successfully since 2014; the Formula E Prix is among the fastest- growing sporting events in the world.

The Formula E is a single-seater motorsport championship for electric cars being organised by Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), in collaboration with the Telangana government. Hyderabad will be joining London, Paris, Monaco and Berlin in the race circuit.

The trail runs (two races) conducted by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), in association with the Indian Racing League (IRL) to test its readiness for the race in February could be termed a good beginning, notwithstanding the few hiccups when a branch from a tree fell on the track.
