A New Chapter in Healthcare: West Bengal Joins Ayushman Bharat, Bringing Health Cover to Millions

West Bengal Joins Ayushman Bharat

West Bengali: In a landmark move that could transform healthcare access for millions of residents, West Bengal has officially become the 36th State/Union Territory to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), India’s flagship public health insurance programme. The decision marks a major milestone in the country’s journey toward universal health coverage and is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare security for economically vulnerable families across the state.

The implementation was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Health Authority (NHA) and the Government of West Bengal. With this step, the state joins the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance scheme, which provides eligible families with health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh annually for secondary and tertiary hospitalization.

For many families, the significance of this development goes far beyond policy. Medical emergencies often place enormous financial strain on households, particularly those with limited incomes. The expansion of Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal is expected to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and improve access to quality treatment across a vast network of empanelled hospitals. According to reports, nearly 1.4 crore families in the state will gain access to benefits under the scheme, while around six crore residents could potentially be covered.

The rollout also opens the doors to treatment at more than 36,000 empanelled hospitals across India, allowing beneficiaries to seek care even outside their home state. This portability feature is particularly valuable for migrant workers, students, and families who may need medical services while travelling or living away from home.

Healthcare experts view the decision as a significant boost to public health infrastructure and financial protection. By integrating a larger population into the national healthcare framework, the scheme is expected to improve early access to treatment and reduce the burden of catastrophic medical expenses on families.

Beyond the statistics, the move carries a powerful message about healthcare equity. For countless families who have delayed treatment due to financial constraints, the scheme offers renewed hope and security. As West Bengal begins implementing Ayushman Bharat, the focus will now shift to ensuring smooth enrollment, awareness, and effective delivery of benefits so that the promise of affordable healthcare reaches every eligible household.
