Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Facebook’s corporate name is being changed to Meta. Facebook’s namesake service will be one of the subsidiaries of Meta, alongside Instagram and WhatsApp, instead of an overarching brand. Zuckerberg said during the announcement that the name was inspired by the Greek word meta, which means “beyond.” He said, “for me, it symbolizes that there is always more to build.” It has also been said in a press release of the organization that it is planning to begin trading under the stock ticker “MVRS” from December 1 onwards.
This name change of the organization is being viewed by many as an effort to overhaul Facebook’s reputation and increase the following after a series of downfalls from issues including misinformation on its platforms, content moderation failures and general perception about the negative effect it has on mental health of users.
