India is witnessing exponential growth in the electric vehicles segment. Dr Deb Mukherji, MD, Omega Seiki Mobility speaks to IndiGlobal Media Network on the recent trends and what OSM has to offer
Take us about Omega Seiki Mobility products.
Omega is completely an integrated business model. We are in two wheelers, scooters and are working on the motor cycle as well. Then 3- wheeler, cargo as well as passenger vehicles are our main products. Also, we are coming up with trucks; the one tonne pay load as well as three tonne pay load segments. In short, we have three categories, two wheelers, three wheelers and four wheelers. Everything is powered by lithium batteries. On the supply chain side, we are probably the only company having our own supply chain of power trays and batteries.
When we talk about Omega Seiki mobility, we talk about the last mile connectivity. Could you please elaborate a little more on this?
Application of the two and three wheelers happened in the last mile where the e-commerce companies and several other food sector companies saw the value being created. There is a huge economic benefit by using the electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler. Unfortunately, in India the transition started with the low and Chinese quality vehicles and we believe that phase is over and industry is looking for really a good quality robust vehicle.
Against this backdrop, OSM comes in. Everything we do is made in India, from design to development. Hence, we are able to provide guarantee. Also, we deploy our own vehicles. Our own last mile mobility is today largest in electric mobility.
Not only that, we are the largest player with several leading e-commerce companies and our vehicles are run by our own staff and our own charging stations. This way we are able to provide complete solution to our customers whether it could be manufacturing, mobility, charging and even financing so it’s a complete package for our customers.
What is your footprint in India?
We have 140 dealerships across India. These are around 20 states and we are going to cover more. Our major focus has been south and Delhi NCR. These regions are the two big users of last mile mobility. The focus would be the southern states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu & Delhi NCR which covers Delhi, Haryana and the parts of UP. Our focus is large focus is going to be Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
We are looking at North East in a very aggressive way. Very soon we will be announcing our project there which includes the manufacturing in North East. We are very bullish on North East.
North east has come out with the specific EV Policy. Your comments.
After 76 years of independence we are seeing North East getting what it deserves in terms of connectivity, ecosystem creation, job creation and lots of attention. It has huge potential there is a large young population, educated and disciplined. I am very positive about North East which can be the next successful story.
India is seeing an exponential growth of electric vehicles. Are we ready with the charging Infrastructure?
This kind of rapid growth demands a very fast and large basic support infrastructure creation. We are seeing the first time in the country and never seen this kind of significant and profound impact in any industry. India has always played a catchup role for any technology whether it could be technology, computers, and cell phones.
This is the first time India is pretty much sink with the other markets like Europe, US. In fact, India is taking the lead in that sense and creating the infrastructure in creating the lead.
In Europe we don’t see this kind of initiatives. They have their challenges the energy cause, the inflation the lack of labour. The government is working on two aspects; one is the speed of change which is exponentially growing and second is the scale of change. We are not used to see this kind of radical change in India but this is the time which India is taking these initiatives.
We assume that in next 5-10 years India can really become the EV Country for the rest of the word. We can become the global hub for motor manufacturing, electronic parts manufacturing and even the batteries parts, manufacturing.
Is it true that Omega Seiki Mobility is also coming with an electric tractor?
Agriculture is something which is right for disruption. It is the largest employer in this country but it is also hugely unorganised sector and inefficiency at every level right from farming to use of the fertilisers.
We identified that India would need the small farm mechanisation and not necessarily a tractor. The electrically driven equipment and implements which would be a combination of the tractor or even the drone which can be charged by our own electric vehicles. We have a patent on that technology. These drones will be used for the data mapping as well as the pesticides usage and it’s a huge benefit for the farmers community in terms of economic benefit using less labour etc.
We will come out with a small and easy to use and very cost-effective tractor therefor essentially, we are packaging the farming as a service which will include the e-tractor, farm mechanising, and it will include drones and the charging augmented by solar panels.
