Skyroot Aerospace Touches the Stars: India Gets Its First Space-Tech Unicorn

Skyroot Aerospace

India’s private space race has reached a historic milestone. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has officially become the country’s first space-tech unicorn, crossing the $1 billion valuation mark and signalling a major leap for India’s growing innovation economy.

The company achieved the feat after raising nearly $60 million in fresh funding from global investors, pushing its valuation to around $1.1 billion. The achievement is not just a financial milestone for one startup , it represents a defining moment for India’s ambitions in the global space industry.

Founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot began with a bold vision: make space launches affordable, accessible, and commercially scalable from India. What started as a small team working out of Hyderabad has now become one of the biggest symbols of India’s private deep-tech revolution.

Skyroot first captured national attention in 2022 when it successfully launched Vikram-S, India’s first privately built rocket to reach space. That mission proved that Indian private companies could do what was once possible only for national space agencies. Today, the company is preparing for another landmark mission with Vikram-1, expected to become India’s first privately developed orbital rocket.

The timing of this achievement reflects a much larger transformation taking place in India’s space ecosystem. Over the past few years, India has opened up the space sector to private participation, allowing startups access to testing facilities, launch infrastructure, and collaboration opportunities. Skyroot was among the first startups to partner with ISRO after these reforms, giving it a crucial early advantage in the rapidly evolving sector.

Industry experts believe Skyroot’s rise could inspire a wave of new investments into Indian deep-tech and aerospace startups. The company’s success demonstrates that India is no longer only a consumer of advanced technology but is increasingly becoming a creator of world-class innovation.

Beyond business headlines and billion-dollar valuations, the story of Skyroot carries a deeper emotional significance. For many young Indian engineers, scientists, and startup founders, it is proof that dreams once associated only with NASA, SpaceX, or global aerospace giants can now be built from Indian soil.

As Skyroot prepares for future launches and expands its rocket manufacturing capabilities, India’s space future suddenly feels closer, faster, and far more ambitious than ever before. The country is no longer simply watching the global space race , it is becoming one of its rising contenders.
