NIMS prescribed energy efficiency dosage

The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, a 1,000-bedded premier healthcare and teaching institute-cum-hospital has been saving Rs 5 lakh power bills since the hospital switched to renewable energy for its fans, tube lights and water heating systems. Dr K Manohar, director of NIMS says, “We have been able to save Rs 5 lakh per month and looking at switching more appliances to renewable energy which will help the hospital save money.”

Solar panels were proposed for both heating water as well as generating electricity to run non-crucial systems. Low-E and insulated glass have been incorporated to minimize heat gain while still maintaining large glazed surface for increasing day-lighting within the buildings.

The initiative has been catching eyeballs. During a recent visit, R K Rai, Bureau of Efficiency, Government of India said that the hospital could be a role model for other hospitals. There are 4,935 lighting fixtures replaced to LED and 2417 ceiling fans.

A designated audit was conducted at NIMS Hospital by National Productivity Council. The Energy Audit Study covered all electrical appliances transformers, motors, chillers, air conditioners, fans and lighting systems. The study also entailed methods for energy savings. The overall savings were estimated at RS 218 lakh per year with an investment of Rs 400 lakh with a payback period of 1.9 years.
