With the opening of Deoghar airport and flight operations by Indigo commencing to the north eastern side of Jharkhand, a spurt of economic activity is expected. The Deoghar airport is the second international airport in Jharkhand after the Birsa Munda International Airport in Ranchi.
The demand for an airport in Deogarh has been long standing from the locals and especially from devotees who throng the famous Baba Baidyanath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The State Government in association with the Airports Authority of India is mulling over the development of an aero-city close to the airport. This will provide employment to locals during the construction and also employment after in administrative and other wings.
The number of pilgrims will increase multi-fold as flight services to Kolkata, Patna, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and other cities start. According to sources is the Ministry of Civil Aviation, every Rs 100 spent will give a return of Rs 325 to the country’s economy. Every one job created will result in the creation of 6.1 more indirect jobs.
Airlines and helicopter services will also give boost to maintenance and overhauling service and cargo handling services.
The Deoghar Airport is spread across 650 acres and has a 2500-meter- long and 45-meter-wide runway, capable of handling both Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 types of aircraft. Economic development in the vicinity of 50 -60 km radius of the airport is bound to happen providing employment and business opportunities to locals.
The Jharkhand’s second airport is fully-equipped with an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, an apron for two Airbus A320s, taxiways, an isolation bay and modern facilities including 24-hour medical assistance for passengers.
Also, the terminal building of the Deoghar Airport has six check-in counters and two arrival belts with a peak hour handling capacity of 200 passengers.
It has been a dream come true for the locals of Deogarh and times are changing fast. “Our time has come, after all,” said Kishore, 42 a resident of Deoghar.
