The core idea envisaged by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is the holistic development of the child but to achieve the aim entails a number of changes. Firstly, one needs to love to learn and learn to learn said Dr Chhalamayi Reddy, Principal, Aurobindo International School. She moderated the session on was NEP 2020 implementation at the recently concluded 2nd IndiGlobal Education Festival 2022 (IGEF) in Hyderabad.
While explaining the main points of the NEP 2020, she drew the attention of the participants on how the Macaulay’s system that the country has been following for over a century is alien in spirit and thought. She further paraphrased Macaulay who had said a long time ago that the civilizational mission was- Indian in colour, English in taste, morals and intellect. NEP 2020 seeks to set this right by revamping the education system which is rooted in Indian ethos and transform India that is Bharat and revive Indian spirit by expressing in modern and contemporary forms.

Anjali Razdan, Academic Director, Meluha International School said that the education policy has a fair chance not to be butchered as was the case in the past as it is backed by the law. She further added that the success of NEP 2020 depends on the how quickly the mindset of the ‘soldiers’ (as she preferred to refer teachers) is changed to move away from rote learning. Students are literate but not educated and if they are to become holistic learners, the paradigm shift needs to take place in the mind first. Dr T Sudha, Academic Director, Delhi Public School and Pallavi Educational Institutions said that efforts have been underway to weed out rote learning and assessments too have been designed in such a way that the students do it. The aim is to Do It Yourself.
