Kerala’s NHM Bags Top e-Governance Award for ‘Ashadhara’ Rare Disease Care Platform

Ashadhara

The National Health Mission (NHM) Kerala has won first place in the State e-Governance Awards 2025 (Health & Medicine category) for its pioneering project Ashadhara, a digital platform designed to manage hemophilia and other rare bleeding disorders. The award was presented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The Ashadhara initiative has built a digital registry of nearly 5,000 patients suffering from genetic bleeding and coagulation disorders such as hemophilia, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and other hemoglobinopathies. By enabling timely treatment, equitable access, and patient-centered care, the platform has significantly improved the quality of life for affected individuals.

Kerala has also established integrated hemoglobinopathy care centres in all districts, enhanced laboratory facilities, and strengthened physiotherapy and intensive care services. The state broke new ground by introducing universal emicizumab prophylaxis for children under 18 with Hemophilia A, the first program of its kind in the country.

Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Vinay Goyal, IAS, Mission Director, NHM Kerala, said: “The Ashadhara project reflects Kerala’s commitment to using digital innovation to deliver inclusive and equitable healthcare. This recognition is a tribute to the dedication of our health workforce, the collaboration of patient advocacy groups, and the resilience of patients and their families. With Ashadhara, we have moved beyond merely managing survival to enabling patients to lead confident, fulfilling lives.”

Officials emphasized that Kerala’s efforts have helped move past an era of high mortality and disability due to untreated bleeding disorders. Patients are now “not just surviving, but thriving,” thanks to coordinated care and digital monitoring.

The recognition reaffirms Kerala’s leadership in e-health innovations and its focus on accessible, patient-centric healthcare delivery. Along with NHM Kerala, the district administrations of Thiruvananthapuram, Wayanad, and Kannur were also felicitated at the awards ceremony.
