Hyderabad has many followers of Carnatic music, now they can look forward to first-ever Carnatic-Choir Concert. In what can be termed as a unique assembly of 80-storng singing ensemble in the age group 5 to over 60 plus, the choir is to perform to an audience in the picturesque amphitheatre at Centre for Cultural Research and Training here in Kondapur Hyderabad on May 20 at 5 p.m.

Swarnam School of Music (SSM) in association with IndiGlobal Media network is organising the event. The members of the choir include 20 under-privileged children from two Zilla Parishad schools in Gachibowli and Film Nagar. They would be rendering classical Carnatic, semi-classical and folk songs in seven languages.

Speaking about the concert and allaying any fears of purists, Dr Preethi Gopalan Deshmukh, Founder, Swarnam School of Music says, ““This is not a fusion of styles; we are retaining all that makes Carnatic music so unique while only borrowing some elements of Western Music.” It is an attempt to infuse techniques from western music and other music genres including Indian folk and apply them to traditional Carnatic music, she further added.

The songs are a tribute to the rich cultural roots of Carnatic music and include pieces in Sanskrit, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam and English to portray the diversity within South-Indian Classical Music. The initiative is also to pay a tribute to reverend composers who have been forgotten with time.

Samastha (Hyderabad’s First Carnatic Choir Concert), is scheduled for May 20 at 5 pm at Centre for Cultural Research and Training, Opposite CII, Near Google office, Kothaguda, Kondapur. Tickets are available on Paytm Insider.
