New Delhi: Former lawyer and politician Swaraj Kaushal – a man whose life spanned the courtroom and corridors of power – passed away on December 4, 2025, at the age of 73. His death, announced by his family and confirmed by party sources, marks the end of a long and storied journey in public service.
Born on July 12, 1952, in what is today Himachal Pradesh, Kaushal earned his law degree and rose quickly through the legal profession, becoming a senior advocate at the age of 34.
He earned national prominence for his role in high-profile cases, including defending socialist leader George Fernandes during the turbulent Emergency years.
Kaushal’s deep engagement with India’s northeast followed, as he took up the mantle of constitutional adviser to the then-underground Mizo National Front. His efforts helped pave the way for the landmark Mizoram Peace Accord of 1986, which ended two decades of insurgency in the region – a legacy that defined much of his public stature.
In 1987 he became the first Advocate General of Mizoram, and three years later, at just 37, he was appointed the state’s Governor – serving from 1990 to 1993.
Later, he entered national politics and served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha between 1998 and 2004, representing Haryana under the banner of the then-regional Haryana Vikas Party.
Beyond professional accolades, Kaushal’s life was deeply entwined with personal loss and public memory. He married his college colleague Sushma Swaraj in 1975 – a friendship steeped in activism and shared ideals that eventually led to one of India’s most respected political partnerships. The couple had one daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, now a member of the Lok Sabha. Sushma Swaraj’s untimely death in 2019 had left a void in both public life and private family circles.
Today, remembrance for Kaushal pours in from across the political spectrum. In a heartfelt message, his daughter Bansuri Swaraj described him as the embodiment of affection, discipline, simplicity, patriotism, and boundless patience.
“Your legacy, your values, and your blessings will be the foundation of every journey ahead,” she wrote. Tributes also came from contemporaries and colleagues who remembered him as a fearless lawyer, a thoughtful administrator, and a statesman to the core.
As India reflects on the life of Swaraj Kaushal, many recall a man who bridged the worlds of law and governance, regional conflicts and national politics, personal sorrow and public duty. He stands as a compelling reminder that meaningful change often comes from commitment, compassion, and unwavering conviction.
