Explore Agriculture: Akash Deep (IAS) exhorts youngsters

Akash Deep (IAS), Commissioner & Secretary, Environment and Forest, SPD, ARIAS, Govt of Assam appealed to young minds to give a thought about exploring Agriculture as it is  very rewarding and highly productive at present. There can be no culture without agriculture, he quipped. Agriculture and Allied sectors especially Horticulture is definitely one of the sunrise sectors. The potential is yet to be tapped in the NorthEast Region, the 2005 batch IAS officer said while addressing the audience, comprising a big number of students, in the valedictory session of the two-day IndiGlobal Bharat Summit held in IIT Guwahati, Assam on February 27 and 28.

There are many varieties in Horticulture namely fruits like Pineapple, Ananas, Oranges and Bananas. When it comes to Orchids (Floriculture)-870 varieties out of 1300 existing in the world are found here in the North East, he informed.

The World Bank project along with the Assam government will help new entrepreneurs or already existing businesses through mentoring, sharing knowledge, skills, hand-holding or giving any sort of subsidy etc. We offer all types of assistance starting from how to form a company, business, the idea and ideation, hand holding, providing credit linkage, supporting through Equity or buying your Equity, the senior IAS officer said.

In fact very soon we will have our own kind of program similar to “Shark Tank” where we will be asking budding entrepreneurs to pitch for their projects relating to Agriculture before us. “There are various schemes in the Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries and Poultry sectors and there are a lot of ways we can help you out. Northeast can be a hub and epicentre for organic and various exotic kinds of crops,” Akash Deep said.
