Capgemini succeeds in reducing energy use by 24%

The French multinational company Capgemini has succeeded in reducing its energy use by a whopping 24 % in eight months. The efforts to go green have been on for a long time as the company is committed to create a sustainable and energy efficient work place. From reducing the energy use by 19.8% in 2015, today the company has managed to raise it to 24% largely thanks to the use of wireless sensors and Artificial Intelligence.

The Energy Command Centre (ECC) at the Bengaluru campus has large monitors that indicate how much energy is used by various departments. The centre’s main aim is to track and also reduce the scope 1 and scope 2 emissions. After the establishment of the ECC and with the AI and machine learning the energy consumption reduced by 24%. Capgemini has 13 facilities in India and more than 3.5 lakh employees work in these facilities.

Vishwanathan Rajendran, director, facility engineering services at Capgemini said that it took three years to establish the ECC and for it to become operational. The team installed wireless sensors, in data centres and wired sensors in air conditioners and other devices and connected it to the company’s Ethernet and automated the process.

The cooling system in floors gets automatically adjusted based on the air quality and temperature. In data centres, each rack has a different capacity load and higher loads heat up more. The wireless sensors detect the temperature and automatically adjust the cooling.

Capgemini accelerated the deployment of renewable energy across its entities in India and Europe since 2019. In 2019, Capgemini’s Bangalore EPIP campus was the first corporate campus in India to receive the Net Zero Energy Platinum certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
