Amaravati – The Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has unveiled significant reforms for the Intermediate courses, revising passing criteria, paper-structure and subject patterns to better align with national standards.
Key Changes in Passing Criteria
From the 2025-26 academic year for first-year students (and 2026-27 for second-year students), students must secure a minimum 30 % in each paper and an aggregate of 35 % in one attempt to be declared as passed.
Revised Subject Structures
- In mathematics, the previous split of “Maths 1A” and “Maths 1B” has been merged into a single paper carrying 100 marks (instead of two separate 75-mark papers). The pass mark for this paper has been increased to 35 (previously 26 per paper).
- For the BiPC stream (science), the board has combined “Botany” and “Zoology” into a single paper titled “Biology” — weighted 43 marks for Botany and 42 marks for Zoology (total 85 marks). First-year students must get 29 marks to pass, while second-year students need 30 marks. Even if individual paper cut-offs are met, the overall aggregate rule of 35% still applies.
- Major science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology now have a pass mark of 29 out of 85 marks for first-year students, and 30 out of 85 for second year. A combined score of 59 marks across both years is required to pass these subjects.

New Electives and Question-Paper Pattern
- A flexible elective system has been introduced, offering 24 elective subjects across all streams, enabling students to choose based on interest and future career goals.
- Starting with the upcoming first-year public exams, objective-type questions worth one mark each will be included — with no choices provided for these items. This aims to assess students’ conceptual presence of mind more rigorously.
- Practical examinations in Physics, Chemistry and Biology will continue with 30 marks allotted. Students re-appearing under the old syllabus/exam scheme are not covered by the new changes.
Syllabus Alignment & Exam Details
- The NCERT curriculum will be implemented this academic year across all subjects, bringing AP’s Intermediate system into line with national standards.
- The Intermediate Public Examinations (IPE) for 2026 are scheduled to begin on 23 February 2026. The board has opened fee submissions, with a late‐fee of Rs 1,000 acceptable up to 30 October.
