Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy laid the foundation stone for the construction work of Ramayapatnam Port in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday. The port would be completed in two phases with a total budget outlay of over Rs 14,000 crore.
Addressing the people of Ramayapatnam, the Chief Minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said, “The port will benefit the state with an increase in economic activity. The cost of transportation will also come down significantly. Further, the project provides 10,000 direct and 30,000 indirect employments to the people of the state.”
Chief Minister Jagan expressed his gratitude to the people and banks that had sanctioned loans for the port. He added that 75 percent of the jobs in the port are reserved for the locals. “Apart from the existing six ports in the state, four more ports are to be built and nine fishing harbors. Bhoomi Puja will be done for the rest soon,” said the Chief Minister.
Ramayapatnam port is to be constructed in two phases with the first phase costing Rs 3,736.14 crore and the final phase with Rs 10,640 crore. The port will be built by Ramayapatnam Port Development Corporation Limited, under AP Maritime Board, a state government organization.
The first phase of Ramayapatnam port will consist of four berths constructed keeping cargo, coal, and containers in mind. The government in addition has set an export target of 25 million tons per year with the first phase. In the second phase, the government plans to expand to 138.54 million tons per year, with a total of 19 berths being constructed.
The port will play a crucial role in industrial, commercial, and transport services for many districts including Rayalaseema, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Ranga Reddy, and Hyderabad in Telangana. The port will be serving purposes such as transportation of coal, iron ore, granite, food grains, and other grains including rice, cement, fertilizers, tobacco, chili, aqua products, containers, etc., to other states like Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Maharashtra.
The government, which has undertaken the construction of 9 shipping harbors for Rs 3500 crore, will complete the construction of 4 harbors as part of phase 1.
