New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that the board examinations for Classes X and XII will commence on February 17, 2026, introducing a first-of-its-kind two-session model for Class X students.
Under the new scheme, Class X students will face exams in two windows:
- First session: February 17 to March 6
- Second session (optional): May 15 to June 1
The second session is designed for students who wish to improve their performance. If a student appears in both sessions, the higher score will be considered. CBSE officials clarified that no separate supplementary exams will be necessary under this structure, as the second session doubles as the improvement opportunity.

For Class XII, the exams will also start on February 17 and run until April 9.
Key Points & Implementation Details
- The syllabus, examination pattern, and evaluation criteria remain the same across both sessions.
- Evaluation of answer scripts will begin about 10 days after the respective papers are conducted and finish within 12 days.
- For example, if the Class XII Physics exam is on February 20, evaluation might start by March 3 and conclude by March 15.
- Approximately 45 lakh candidates are expected to appear for both classes combined, spanning India and 26 other countries.
Rationale & Reactions
The two-session model is the result of prolonged deliberations and is intended to:
- Reduce student stress by giving them a second chance within the same academic year
- Align CBSE with more flexible global assessment standards
- Eliminate the need for a separate supplementary exam
Education commentators have welcomed the move as a positive shift toward student-friendly assessments. They believe it provides breathing room for learners to overcome one poor exam performance without being labeled failures. However, effective logistics, timely evaluation, and clear communication will be key to its success.
