Persistent cough after recovery from Omicron variant has been observed in people in the country. The cough persists from 15 to 21 days and can cause weakness. There are also complaints of fatigue and weakness which are being observed for a long time.
The reason for persistent cough is the Omicron variant attacks the upper respiratory system causing congestion and cough. The Cough begins after the cold and fever subside. In healthy and vaccinated adults and teenagers too, the cough is found to be persistent for 10 to 15 days. In those with co-morbid conditions, it is found to be for a longer time.
Dr Ramana Prasad, senior pulmonologist at KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad says, “Omicron variants are attacking the upper respiratory tract and leading to severe allergic bronchitis. In a few patients who have conditions of compromised lung functioning or underlying Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or Asthma the prolonged cough after Covid 19 will require proper treatment.”
The ‘terrible’ cough creates a weakness in the body and also makes it difficult to carry out work. There are people who are not able to get back to their shops, establishments or place of work as the cough is very persistent.
Attendance in online classes in students is also very low, as many of them are not able to sit for long hours due to cough.
After recovery from Covid 19, it is haunting many of them and that is also the reason for absence from work. While the Omicron variant is mild, experts state that the post-infection cycle is showing that cough, weakness and fatigue are some of the complaints that will require attention.
Dr Mahboob Khan, superintendent of Government Chest Hospital in Telangana says, “Those who continue to suffer from cough post the disease period will have to be evaluated. Their earlier medical conditions of allergy, asthma, earlier infection from Covid 19 variants, respiratory infections and also lung disorders will need to be looked into. Since the virus attacks the upper-respiratory system there is supposed to be a severe infection in the throat region. Irritation of the throat is the only major complaint from many people. It subsides as the viral load reduces in the body.”
The severe cough is being further aggravated by the history of cigarette smoking, pollution levels in the neighborhood, allergies to dust and other particulate matters in the environment.
