Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmit Singh has been sworn in as the new Governor of Uttarakhand. He is the 8th Governor of the state. The oath of office was administered to Singh by Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court Justice RS Chauhan at Raj Bhawan, Dehradun. State Legislative Assembly Speaker Prem Chand Aggarwal, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami along with his cabinet colleagues were present in the swearing-in ceremony.
Singh is a highly decorated former Army Officer. He retired as the Deputy Chief of the Indian Army in 2016 after serving for 40 years. He has held prestigious posts including that of the deputy chief of Army Staff, Adjutant General, and Corps Commander of the strategic XV Corps that inspects the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir. Singh has also handled China operational and military-strategic issues as the Additional Director General of Military Operations. He has been a part of a several joint working groups, expert groups, annual dialogues and China study group meetings for more than a decade while serving in the Indian Army.
Singh is an exemplary scholar as well. He has received two MPhil degrees from Chennai and Indore universities respectively. He has also done PhD on ‘Smart Power for National Security Dynamics’ from Chennai University.
