113 percent jump in earnings of Indian Railways in quarter 2

Following relaxation in restrictions imposed due to coronavirus and the festival season beginning, the Indian Railways has registered an increase of 113 per cent in earnings from passenger segment during the second quarter of 2021-2022 when compared to the first quarter. In the first quarter from passenger fare; the revenues earned were Rs 4,921.11 crore, while in second quarter, the earnings have soared to Rs 10,513.07 crore marking a steep jump.

1,402 mail express trains at normal rates, and 323 holiday special trains at the usual higher rates is being run by Indian Railways. Higher rates have been fixed to discourage people from embarking on journeys that are avoidable in nature. In 2019-2020, the railways had earned Rs 53,525.57 crore. In 2020-21, it was able to earn only Rs 15,507.68 crore, which is around 71.03 per cent less in the passenger segment leading to a loss of Rs 38,017 crore due to the pandemic.
