Vaccination for people with mental-illness to be ensured within a month – Supreme Court Directive

All the states have got a directive from Supreme Court to ensure vaccination of people with mental-illness within one month. A three-judge Bench of Justice Hima Kohli, D.Y. Chandrachud, and Justice Vikram Nath passed the order. They did so while hearing a contempt petition and other applications filed by Petitioner-in-Person Advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal, highlighting the issue of the death of three inmates at a Maharashtra Mental health facility and the need of vaccinating the inmates urgently.

The basis on which the contempt of plea was filed is the non-compliance of directions of apex court in the matter of setting up rehabilitation homes for persons with mental illness (who have been cured, or who do not need further hospitalisation, or who are homeless or are not accepted by their families.
The bench has also directed that the entire pending works in relation to the half constructed mental homes should be completed within a six-month period.
